Personal Nostalgia!

Many moons ago (about five years ago) I worked at a glorious family fun centre known as Laser Quest. It was the kind of job that you kind of dislike because people are SUCH jerks (and if you dislike kids like I do…it doesn’t help) and because guys will find a way to make your code name dirty, no matter WHAT it is.

Sidenote: Do you know how many dirty words and scenarios rhyme and spawn from “Shasta”?

But it also turned out to be one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. I have never been able to find a team just like the one I had at Laser Quest. I talk about it constantly (which then started the “This one time at band camp..” comparisons) and I compare all my jobs to Laser Quest. It’s definitely super lame, but I never realized how lucky I was to work at LQ until I left and had other jobs. Our tight knight little crew of “nerds” was definitely one of a kind and I miss just about everyone I worked with. When I say “just about”, I mean the ones I don’t really talk to on a regular basis. And the few that I just clashed with. C’est la vie.

Now, I didn’t get any REALLY good pictures of this mani, but I feel that the few I got, get my point across.

Birthday's are a blast!

Oh my God my cuticles are terrible. I hate you, Winter!

I realize that my nails really aren’t the greatest canvas for art, since they are short. But I try.

A blast from the past: It’s Always Been You <3

Let’s just take a moment and acknowledge the underrated movie of the same name, starring Brendan Fraiser and Christopher Walken. What a great movie.

Alright. Let’s get down to business to defeat THE HUNS! (I am full of movie references. Stay tuned)

When one has as much nail polish as I do, one just HAS to come up with a filing system, just to be able to keep one’s head on straight. So I got right down to it and started THREE methods. I can’t stop at one. Mainly because I’m trying to find the best one for me. Jamison’s sister echoed my unspoken thought of filling a wall with shelves and just putting all my nail polish on a wall. Well. OBVIOUSLY I WANT TO DO THAT BUT I LIVE IN AN APARTMENT! CRIES! A colourful wall of lacquer is my dream. Think of how EASY it would be to just look at and say “Oh, yes. I’d like that one” and then just reach out and grab it! In time…

Anyway, after sifting through an alarming amount of nail polish (400 bottles and counting O_O) I weeded out all my random, one off brands that I only have about three of. And that’s when I found THIS gem from my past:

Initiating IGNORE MY YELLOW NAILS sequence...

Now, this puppy means very much to me, for a few reasons. And I shall list them now:

1) Caboodles is a shadow of my teenage past. I only ever owned two and in my naive days, I threw one of them out because it was like painting my nails with metallic purple molasses.

2) This nail polish was a gift on my 16th birthday, which I spent in Niagra Falls with the high school band and three of the best friends I have ever had in my life.

3) I am still in contact with all three of those people.

4) My 16th birthday will be one of my top memories in life. And this nail polish will always remind me of that.

5) It was the first birthday present I ever got from Jamison. Way back when we were just…kids, really. He went to a dollar store and bought this for me. Then he arrived at my hotel room door in the wee hours of the morning of June 3, with a Hostess cupcake (complete with candle <3) and handed me this polish.

And I still have it. Even better: we are now sharing a life and nail polish is in danger of taking control of our guest room.

Yes. It is completely lame and cheesy. But every now and then, it’s nice to have a completely out of the ordinary cute story involving your significant other. Especially when you are completely unaware of the fact that it will become something you can tell to people.

I love Jamison, and I’m quite sure I always will, no matter what happens. In life and in nail polish.

Best base coat ever?

Well, at least for me. My local Wal Mart went and re-did its cosmetic area. They did a complete overhaul of the nail polish section, which was like walking into heaven for me. There was a plethora of new nail goodies that I couldn’t WAIT to stare at for hours. I do that a lot. Drool over polish that I don’t have the money to purchase. Well, that and pens. I could stare at pens forever. If someone ever put pens and nail polish in the same aisle…I’d be a goner. Oh and notebooks! You know what…just, ignore that whole thing about pens and notebooks. This is a nail polish blog. And I have gotten quite off topic.

ANYWHO. One day before work, I discovered that some new line of base and top coats, as well as nail treatments, had surfaced. They were hard to miss in bottles like this (no rhyme intended):

I should have prefaced this picture with the whole: The standard volume of a lacquer is about 15mL so this bottle is a monster, yadda yadda yadda but I think it’s pretty obvious, since I can barely get all of my fingers around the bottle. Now, I have said time and time again that I work in an industry that is NOT kind on hands and nails. So when I’m working, I don’t often paint my nails a colour that I love, love LOVE because at the end of the day, none of that polish survives. For obvious reasons, I was skeptical of this base coat’s claim of “EPOXY!” I’ve used epoxy. If you get that shit on something, it is NOT coming off without a fight. But at $5 (yes you read that right, FIVE BUCKS) it’s worth a try. At least if it doesn’t work, I don’t have to buy base coat for a while.

So I followed the instructions (apply two coats to clean, bare nails and let dry) and then painted on one of my most GORGEOUS polishes:

Uh...ok not the best picture. Let's try that again...

This is a bit better...

This is an amazing Quo by Orly glassfleck polish called Turquoise Moonlight. Basically Orly just bottled up the leftovers from their Cosmic FX line and gave them new names. But I don’t care. This is a beautiful colour. It always makes me think of The Little Mermaid and when you get this sucker out in the sun…well. It should be illegal for polish of this magnitude to have to suffer winter months of sunless days…

I applied this polish on a Saturday night, on top of this Wunderbase and slept on it. The second picture is Sunday morning, before an 8 hour shift of hard, hand labor. I didn’t apply top coat…because I am a naughty lacquer head and chose sleep over shine.

This was taken this morning, before Family Day at Quiznos. For those Americans out there, that is Canada’s answer to President’s Day. We don’t have presidents and with the Prime Minister we’ve had for the last…six elections, we wouldn’t dare make up a holiday to celebrate him.

Well: POO. ON. FAMILY DAY. We three workers got DESTROYED by the hungry crowds. The dishes piled up and the sandwiches just kept coming. I couldn’t leave the line for the entire five and a half hours I was there. So how did my nails fare?

Wunderbase. That is what I'm calling it FOREVER

That chip on my index finger is from where my nail peeled. And my right hand had some chips because, well, I’m right handed and that hand takes more abuse.

So, to sum up: THIS BASE COAT IS AMAZING AND ONLY COSTS FIVE DOLLARS AT WAL MART! So anyone who wants to keep a mani lasting longer than six seconds, BUY THIS. The best way I can describe how it works, is this: Remember when you were in elementary school and you got white glue on your hands? And when it dried, you could peel it off? ( I know you know what I’m talking about) Yeah. This base coat does that. But somehow absorbs the polish and the two meld into this glorious mani that can apparently take on the world.

I could have saved you this time and just titled the entry: “BUY THIS NAO!” and shown a picture of the bottle. But where’s the fun in that?

Sally Hansen Gem Crush

Well, well, well. Sally Hansen, you rascal. You somehow managed to get an entire line of GLITTER, by me. Joke’s on you, I picked up two colours: Cha-Ching! and…the silver one wit blue hex glitter. Hang on. Gotta find the name…jeez, I am the worst blogger. SHOWGIRL CHIC! That’s the one. In the end, who CARES what they are called? THEY ARE GLITTER AND THEY ARE SO EFFING HOT!

Cha-Ching! reminds me SO much of Excuse Moi! from the Muppets collection. Only having TWO of the Muppets nail polish (Designer…de Better! and Warm and Fozzie) I can’t say for sure. But I am sure of this: I do not like red polish. But Cha-Ching! is fabulous!

When you cut to the chase, ALL of the Gem Crush colours are AMAZING. You had me at glitter, Sally Hansen. You could throw in very inappropriate words and I would still be all over it. And as far as Jamison is concerned, glitter is code for STI or something…OK. Enough. On with the pictures!

PLEASE bear with me while I save for a camera!

Milani One Coat Glitters!

So I recently had my first nail polish swap with a lovely lady in Texas. I had a bottle of Whimsical (which is SO not my cup of tea and don’t know why I ever thought it would be) that I didn’t want. But I knew that it was a much sought after polish. I posted a cry for help on my other blog and she gladly responded. She sent me three of Milani’s One Coat Glitters (Red Sparkle, Blue Flash and Purple Gleam) which I just received yesterday. I’m here with Red Sparkle and Purple Gleam. The red is DEFINITELY a one coater. The blue and purple are a bit dodgy but still offer more than enough coverage than your average nail polish. But if you despise VNL, then you will need maybe half a coat more on the blue and purple. But I digress…

It was a particularly sunny day here in good old Ontario and Jamison and I both had the day off. We had already planned on driving up to our nation’s capital and picking his sister up so she could come home for a little visit. When we reached our destination, I snapped a few quick pics of these babies in the sun and BLAM!

Blurred to show the delish sparkle

BAZZAAM! Like I said: Toto, I don’t think we’re in nail polish Kansas anymore…

More fun with frankens!

Posted on

I’ve been frankening up a storm lately. I’m not sure what it is, but I just have to make a lot of polish!

I love this colour. It’s lush and glowy and RAWR!

And this was a colour I whipped up for Jamison’s sister. She’s a big pink polish fan (her words) and I do not enjoy the colour half as much. But I could make an exception for this glitter love!
