I’ve been feeling kind of down these days. I am still painting my nails, but I haven’t been feeling it. I’m just…in a funk. A lot of things need to change in my life, and I feel overwhelmed by it all. But, one step at a time.

One thing that DOESN’T need to change in my life, is nail polish. Well…maybe how much of it I have needs to change. More or less? I’m not sure yet. But I do need to start preparing better pictures and maybe more swatches…I need to plan a time for nail polish. It’s sad, considering I only work part time (one of the things I need to change!) and should have oodles of time for lacquer. Alas, that just isn’t the case. I need a space. A work area, where I can franken, and swatch and create GREAT nail art. Or, just regular nail art, until I get better. Everyone needs to start somewhere. And while I completely understand when great, established bloggers look back on their old work and cringe, I like to look at it and think “Wow. I cared enough about something to keep going!” No matter how much I may suck now, I love this SO much, that I am willing to forego my usual impatience and just keep swimming. (Sorry, I’ve been watching Finding Nemo every night for about a month now. It relaxes me)

So, here is some random nail art, both abstract and detailed. Please forgive any mess or errors I may have made in the process…

Easter mani!

This is something I found while spending HOURS on my other blog. It’s a “Plastic Wrap” mani. Basically all you do is lay down your base colour. For this I chose Lacy Lilac from Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear Line. Let it dry. Then, (I did one nail at a time) apply your second colour. While the polish is still wet, dab a rolled up ball of plastic wrap over it, to pick up some of the colour. I used my “Breakfast At Tiffany’s/70’s Tuxedo” franken, Revlon Sun Shine Sparkle and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Chartreuse Chase. Then I topped it off with one coat of NYC’s Matte Me Crazy. My nails looked like Cadbury Mini Eggs, which I ADORE. I really like how this turned out and will probably take another “DAB” (har har, groan, sigh, puns) at it.

I had THREE Easter dinners to go to this year! Product of a broken home, and a stable relationship. Who knew I would have three families in my life? Not this chick. Anywho, I did this water marble for my mom’s & dad’s dinners. I used four colours from Color Club’s new Take Wing collection, which is a GORGEOUS collection of  six glass fleck colours. I love them all. Even the pink. Which rarely happens. I also used some more Lacy Lilac and 70’s Tuxedo for this baby. Don’t ask me why, but I’ve been drawn to pastels lately. Weird… The Take Wing colours are: Daisy Does It (yellow) Wing Fling (pink) Metamorphosis (green/teal) and Sky High (blue). All of these colours are ALSO duochromes! Cue drooling like Homer over a donut…

I serve the Dark Side...

Can I just preface this by saying two things? I need a camera that doesn’t operate on AA batteries and my black nail art pen is shit. As soon as I apply top coat, it cracks. But, thankfully, I have an AMAZING boyfriend (who I often feel like I am letting down because I am so broke all the time. My nail polish does not have anything to do with that, as of late. I haven’t bought nail polish in about a month and a half) in Mr. J and he bought me a dotter tool and a nail art brush! As well as a nail polish that I will eventually post about. What was I saying? Uh…yeah. These are my Empire nails. Believe it or not, I was inspired by Mr. J’s mom, when she posted a picture of Star Wars nails on my Facebook wall…

*takes a deep breath* I’m sorry this post was so verbose and visually stimulating. I hope to resume a regular schedule soon. I still have my To Dupe or Not to Dupe? series on the go. And I promise I will post the next round soon!

Yeah, I hit a bit of a nail slump. Looooooooong hours at work mean noooooooooo time for polish. I do have a couple of manis I can post, and will do so right after this post. As in, this is just a warning/funny/lesson post for myself and anyone else out there who is randomly absent minded like I.

Well, here it is: A while back, I started swatching my polish on false nails glued to coffee sticks. I got the idea from Nailin’ It! when I saw THIS post on holo comparisons. I actually said “This is BRILLIANT” out-loud and my cat looked at me funny. Shut it, cat.

Anywho, enough rambling about my cat that no longer lives with me. I made myself a pot of swatches. And it’s very handy. I need more sticks and nails though, because my collection has swelled to great proportions since I made that pot. But I put my pot on a shelf and carried on with my life. Then I started my “To Dupe or Not To Dupe” series. And I wanted to compare some cerulean blue creme polishes, which includes “Blue Me Away!” from the Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear line. So I went to get my swatch…and found this:

Looks a bit different...

No, you do not need to adjust your monitors. The swatch faded to a very dusty version of it’s former self. I don’t think it was the bottle; I actually used it all up to create my Mr Freeze franken collection.  I think my pot just wasn’t far enough from the sun and fell victim to fading.

The lesson here? Don’t let your polish play in the sun without protection!

Wet N Wild – How I Met Your Magenta

GROAN. The names on these core Fast Dry colours are so cheesy, my lactose intolerance is acting up. Some are worse than others (SaGreena The Teenage Witch, anyone?), but I have to admit that the colours are pretty great. Yes. I am saying that a pink polish, is pretty great. If it were just a plain Barbie/bubblegum pink cream, forget it. But allow me to make my case for this unfortunately named beauty.

Well, not so secret shimmer. Geniusly placed golden shimmer. And it actually comes through on the nail! Had I bothered to apply top coat (which I so often forego because I enjoy sleep) I’m sure it would be more evident. Oh well. Live and learn. Maybe if I get a job that DOESN’T involve food or dishes…

Well hello gorgeous!

I only applied two coats, but if you take countless pictures of your hands like I do, you may want to go with a third to avoid VNL. And don’t forget a top coat! As you can see, it dried with a bit of a suede/velvet finish, which isn’t always a bad thing…unless there is shimmer. Then you want the high gloss shine!

Under a lamp! Look at that gold!

In my almost two years with Jamison, I over-use the exclamation point. The fact that he and I grew up reading Archie comics doesn’t help. They end everything with an exclamation point!

Then, the next day, I added a black crackle accent nail (and top coat) to spice things up! Of course, it didn’t survive Quiznos. Oh well. Just another reason to breathe and reboot!

80s rockstar!

All in all, it is a great colour for a great price. I got mine at Wal Mart but from what I’ve seen, you can pick this up from any place that sells Wet N Wild.

Possibly one of my top ten polishes

I bet that caught someone’s attention. Anyone who knows me at least. I have A LOT of nail polish. Don’t ask me how much, because then I will have to count and that will make me weep at my future as a polish hoarder. Just take my word for it. So when I use a polish more than once within a certain time period, it must be special. And I will be honest, when I saw swatches of this colour (and this entire collection, actually) I was less than impressed. “Back To Boho” is not a collection of colours I would expect myself to like. As far as the name goes, anyway. But then the collection showed up at my local Winners and I saw it in person…

Well. I take back all my negative thoughts. Minus Boho Mojo. Poo on old lady frosts.

But Color Club is rapidly becoming one of my favourite polish brands. I wish my Winners would get more of their collections in! they’ve had the same few for a while and I basically have them all. And like I said, this colour is one that I keep coming back to. I just love how clean it is. I suspect I already have a few colours just like this one and I’m sure that if I do, they will be appearing in “To Dupe or Not To Dupe?”, in case anyone missed out on this collection. Alright! Enough chatter! Picture time!

None of my bottle were labelled (as usual)

I'm getting tired of crackle, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy what I have.

Drink shot!

I love this colour sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

To Dupe or Not To Dupe: China Glaze VS Wet N Wild

Posted on

Howdy! Welcome to round one, or the first post, of my new series: To Dupe or Not To Dupe? A couple of posts back (really, about two posts ago) I mentioned that I was going through my collection and more and more potential dupes, or doubles for my non-polish obsessed readers, were starting to rear their ugly (albeit glittery or shimmery) heads. Instead of lamenting the fact that I really have no control idea what polishes in my collection look like until they are compared against other bottles of polish, I decided to just blog about it. Maybe I could even help some people who might be waffling on two polishes.

I will be one to admit that more often than not, I fall for packaging and even labels in special circumstances (I’m looking at you, Volcom!) so I do my best not to scoff at people who are willing to shell out the big bucks for certain polish brands. But I also live in a town where the average age of citizens is about 75. So I do not always have the ability to pick up all kinds of polish. So in an attempt to help people like me, or people who want to save a few bucks, I’ve decided to do my best to find the cheaper alternatives for HTF or LE (Hard To Find and Limited Edition) colours. I am also no fool; I know much bigger blogs make posts like these. But they don’t always go into great detail and some posts just seem like an afterthought. So here I am, at my computer, typing up my first post, about the first dupe I ever discovered in my collection.

The contenders this match are both a gorgeous, glowy blue. China Glaze Frostbite was the one I picked up first, almost two years ago. I was very disappointed when it barely lasted a day on my nails, declaring that it must be the chemistry of my body that disagreed with it. I have since come to learn that my base/top coat combo mixed in with my job in the food industry were the larger culprits.

But I am a sucker for blue, so when Wet N Wild launched it “Fast Dry” line, I snapped up “Saved By The Blue” so quickly that I didn’t even remember buying it.

Then one day when I was looking for the perfect colour of the day (which was much easier back then because I probably only had about 50 bottles of polish) I noticed something about these two blues that had once made my heart sing…

One of these things is JUST like the other...

Hmmmmmm, are these twins, or just sisters?

If I told you that both of those swatches were China Glaze, would you believe me? I bet you would. But I wouldn’t tell you that because it is a lie and I don’t want to lie to my readers. CG is the top, and WNW is the bottom.

On closer inspection, these are loafers. What? No.

Even up close and personal, these babies are the same. Well, sure, on a swatchsicle they are the same. But how did they fare on the nail?

Unfortunately, they both bubbled. But that was my heavy handed rushing. Now. You tell me which colour is on which nail. They do not alternate; there is no rhyme or reason to the way I painted my nails.

Verdict: Well, WNW is far easier to get your hands on than CG. And about a third of the price. Considering that these two are spot on dupes, I’m going to have to rule WNW as the victor in my books. I like the shape of the WNW bottle a bit more than I like the CG bottle, and I like that SBTB is part of WNW’s core collection. I believe that Frostbite is also part of CG’s core collection, but like I said, I can’t get my mitts on them as easily. Both formulas were good, and the only advantage CG has over WNW, is the brush. I’m not the biggest fan of the Fast Dry brush. I have small nails, so it’s a smidge trickier to control. But all in all, these polishes are indeed twins.

PS. Bonus points to anyone who guesses the reference I made in the Close-up caption.

See you next time, where one of the Kardashian Kolors goes up against the newest line of Wet N Wild’s…

Nicole by OPI “Coral Denominator”

No, that isn’t supposed to say Coral Denomination. It’s a Justin Bieber polish so I’m sure it’s a play on a song of his. Having only really rocked out to Baby, I will have to take their word for it. Normally, this isn’t a colour I would gravitate to, but for some reason, it sang to me. Har har har, pun TOTALLY intended. Maybe I’m just *shudder* getting older. Or maybe I just needed another bottle of nail polish.

I’m going to go with needing another bottle of nail polish. And it’s preeeeeeeetttttty! It has this great, gold shimmer and it’s a pink that FLATTERS MY SKIN TONE!

Under the boring work lights

Slight change in angle...

Backlit by my old computer...I'm not good at the "Outdoor" shots

Yeah it’s blurry…sorry.

Do you see that glorious golden highlight? *insert Homer drooling*

I need to find a signature pose.

No, still not it

Well, I suppose I should get better at taking pictures outside because I didn’t quite get the soft pink of this polish. Oh well. Just trust me when I say that I am not a pink nail polish fan. But this one is just pretty enough to make me look twice.

Starting a new series…

Posted on

I started going through my nail polish and realized that I have a few colours that are regrettably the same. It is inevitable. So, in an effort to help others avoid the mistakes I’ve made (or to help them save a few bucks or grab once thought HTF polish), I’ll be starting the series:

Ho ho ho, I am hilarious. I’ll place the polishes side by side, and let you decide if you do in fact, want the dupe or the original. Hence the name. (Ho ho ho, I’m still hilarious). And then for fun, I’ll throw a picture of the polishes swatched on my own nails, unlabeled, and see how bang on you are with your guesses. Maybe one day, when I have more followers and more nail polishes than one human being will actually ever need in a lifetime, I will start giving one of the polishes away.

Until then, I will just leave the small test for readers. If they are anything like myself, the idea of needing to be right will drive them insane.

I’ll leave with a little preview of what I have in store for you…

My first dupe discovery!

I will take better pictures when I actually post these guys!

Until we meet again…
